Magnesium is one of the most abundant natural
minerals found in the earth’s crust. It is lightest
of all metals and used widely for many different structural
applications. It is used in so many different items in
our everyday lives from auto parts, power tools, sporting
goods, aerospace equipment, fixtures, and material handling
equipment. The fastest growing use of magnesium is in
die casting. Many of the largest automobile manufacturing
companies today use it for cylinder head covers, clutch
housings, steering columns, wheels, instrumental panels,
valve covers, and brake pedal brackets. This is because
magnesium is light weight, durability, and casting properties.
Furthermore, magnesium is used in a wide range of non-automotive
die-case parts including chainsaw housing, bicycle frames,
ski binding, video and digital camera housing, computer
components, etc. It is almost impossible not to have any
product in manufacturing and technology that does not
include magnesium. The use of magnesium alloy is becoming
more and more common and the growth for its use is exponential
as technology continues to find more uses for it.
